Pantry Partners Canning Day

Our next Pantry Partners Canning Day is coming up on April 29th. Having staples in your long term storage can bring great peace of mind. Using them regularly can bring great relief to your food budget.

Some people have wondered exactly what this mysterious Canning Day is all about. So, let us fill you in on the enigmatic inner workings of Pantry Partners.

How a Pantry Partners Canning Day works:
1)      Decide what you want to buy.  See Provident Living and/or Bob's Red Mill.
-          Foods for long term storage should have both a low moisture content and a low oil content. Consider grains, beans, pasta, and sugar. (See Longer Term Storage for more information).
-          Pantry Partners will pick up food ordered through the church cannery or Bob’s Red Mill and have it ready for you to can on Canning Day. You can also find your own products that you can bring to can.
-          Remember to add buckets, cans, and oxygen absorbers to your order so you have something to put your food in! (Even if you supply your own food, you still need something to put it in.)
2)      Fill out the order forms (these will be made available at church, by email, or on the web) and return them with payment to Becky N. or Susan B. by April 26th. (Prices are all listed as ‘subject to change without notice’, though we’ll try to be as current as possible)
3)      Sit back and relax while we pick up your food orders and canning supplies.
-          Decide where you’re going to put all your shiny, new food storage.
-          Or, if you’re acquiring your own food for canning (from WinCo or other sources), get it and have it ready to bring with you to Canning Day.
4)      Canning Day! April 29th Arrive at Susan B.’s house at 9:30am. Plan on staying a few hours.  Work together to can everyone’s items and clean up.  Take your items home with much satisfaction and peace of mind.
5)      Start planning for the next Pantry Partners Canning Day on June 24th

Feel free to contact Becky N. or Susan B. with any questions.

90 Minute Whole Wheat Bread - makes 2 loaves

1) Combine the following in the mixer bowl:
3 1/2 C whole wheat flour*
1/3 C gluten flour/vital wheat gluten (found in the bulk section at Winco)
1 1/4 Tbs instant yeast (such as Red Star)

2) Add 2 1/2 C hot water all at once. Mix 1 minute. Cover and rest 10 minutes.

3) Add the following all at once. Beat 1 minute:
1/3 C oil
1/3 C honey or 1/2 C sugar
1 Tbs vinegar or lemon juice
1 Tbs salt

4) Add 2 1/2 C whole wheat flour one cup at a time, beating between cups until the dough barely pulls from the sides. Beat 10 minutes.

5) Preheat the oven to lukewarm, then turn off.
Shape dough into two loaves and place in greased pans.
Cover and let dough rise in the oven 30 minutes.
Remove cloth, but do not remove the pans from the oven.
Turn oven on to 350. Bake 30 minutes (start the timer immediately - do not wait for the oven to heat up)

*You can use half or all white flour if preferred. This recipe can also be used for rolls, bread bowls and cinnamon rolls.
