How Much Do I Need?
· Store 1 gallon per person per day for two weeks. That’s 14 gallons per person.
o A person needs ½ gallon water per day just for drinking. High activity, heat, nursing mothers and health conditions may increase this amount.
What Do I Store It In?
· Purchase commercially bottled water and use by the expiration date.
OR
· Use PETE or other clean food grade containers.
o This includes camping type water containers, heavy plastic buckets and drums. Consider using different size containers for home use and on the go.
o Do not use containers that have held non-food materials.
o You may use 2-liter pop bottles if they are washed with detergent, rinsed, then sanitized with 1tsp bleach in a quart of hot water and rinsed again.
· Do Not store water in Milk Jugs or Juice Containers as milk protein and fruit sugar cannot be completely removed and will lead to bacterial growth.
How Do I Store Water?
· If your water comes from a commercial utility that uses chlorine (most tap water), just fill the container. No other treatment is necessary.
· If your water comes from a well or non-chlorinated source add 1/8 teaspoon bleach per gallon of water.
o Only use bleach that does not have scents, additives or thickeners.
· Secure the lid tightly and take care not to contaminate the inside by touching it.
· Date the container
Where Do I Put It?
· Ideally water should be stored in a cool, dark place
· Do not store it in a place where there will be water damage in case of accidental leaks.
· Rotate water every six months.
